The Investigations Division is a multi-faceted unit and its investigators are available 24 hours a day to support public safety officers and to respond to all major crime scenes. It is the non-uniformed operational part of the police department. Although detectives are generally dressed in civilian clothes (jacket and tie), like all GDPS Officers, they must be prepared to change into their uniforms if called upon for some special event or disaster.
While Public Safety officers most often are the first officers on the scene of any police event, the Investigations Division is tasked with the responsibility of conducting criminal investigations that require special expertise, or due to their complexity cannot be readily completed by a public safety officer. It is the investigator's job to trace down leads, clues and suggestions in an effort to arrest and prosecute the guilty persons. This division is dedicated to proactive investigative initiatives that provide a safe community.
Investigators also perform such duties as surveillance, intelligence gathering, undercover operations, crime scene investigation and other specialized duties. The criminal investigations division is currently staffed by three investigators and is directly supervised by Capt. Scott Wheatley.
